Custom Coffee Cabinet Wednesday, February 16, 2011 Every now and then I get a wild idea and go to work on it. This one took well over a decade t come to fruition. Between 1989 and 1995 my wife and I were volunteer firefighters. I believe it was in 1994 I had qualified as a burn building instructor on the local fire training grounds at Butte College, California. Shortly thereafter a volunteer company up the canyon had a number of new volunteer firefighters in need of training, and it just so happened that there was an old residence structure on the National Forest land that needed to be burned. I spent a couple of evenings working with the volunteers giving them the basic introduction to structure firefighting, and a few weeks later our companies combined and we burned that abandoned home in a training exercise that lasted the best part of a day.
![]() To add to the personal stories behind this, the horizontal members, including the shelves, are from an old piece of furniture that belonged to my paternal grandparents. It had fallen into a state of disrepair so I took the best of the wood from it and sawed it to fit me needs for this project. The sides were leftover plywood from our waterbed platform, and the face frame was shaped from 2x4's that were part of the stake-sides I built for our '74 Ford 4WD pickup.
